Traceability begins with the identification of products and components

There are two types of traceability: in downstream tracking, the goods are tracked from the producer to the consumer. It is used by manufacturers to narrow down critical products that are known to be affected by technical or human errors along the supply and value chain. In upstream tracking, the goods are tracked from the consumer to the producer. It allows consumers to recognize if they bought one of the affected products and to return it to the seller or manufacturer in case of withdrawal.
